Open post: Professor of Industrial Design
University of Lapland

The following position is open for applications in the Faculty of Art and Design, at the University of Lapland: Professor of Industrial Design, to be filled as of 1 September 2013.

Located in the city of Rovaniemi, on the Arctic Circle, the University of Lapland is an international, multidisciplinary university whose areas of expertise include Arctic affairs and tourism research. You can read more information about us at: http://www.ulapland.fi/InEnglish/About_us.iw3.

The Faculty of Art and Design focuses on plural, multicultural art and design in the northern regions as well as different creative solutions in art and design developed for the needs of services in the north. A lively dialogue between science and art adds its unique stamp on the Faculty’s research activities. Science and art become integrated, for example, in the development of design and media as well as in constructing new communal art education methods. Alongside their scientific approach, many of the Faculty’s doctoral dissertations include an artistic element, such as an exhibition or product development project.

The salary of the position is based between levels 8 and 9 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff in the Finnish universities’ salary system (4,597.75–5,181.23 euros / month). In addition, the total salary includes a salary component based on personal performance; this will amount to at most 46.3% of the job-specific salary component.

The field and duties of the professorship are preliminarily defined as follows:

The professor shall carry out and supervise scientific or artistic work, give education based on it and follow developments in science or art, and participate in societal interaction and international cooperation in his/her field.
The core competence area of the professor will be industrial design: the industrial design process and design skills. The professorship is focused on corporate and industry co-operation, sales of design services, and international co-operation. Co-operation with industries and design work in an international context are major skills in the area of design. We hope that the professor will develop these competence areas in her/his work. An increasingly important part of the designer’s profession is the capacity and skill to market one’s design skills and to network in international, emerging, and developing markets (China, Asia, Africa, and India) as well as in the Arctic context. The professor will conduct research and develop new forms of international design entrepreneurship and collaboration. Furthermore, the professor will develop curricula and teaching in these areas.

In order to succeed in the professor’s duties and be able to promote productive operations of the Faculty, strong commitment to the activities of the scientific and artistic community is required.

Applicants for the professorship are requested to inform if they are available for a fixed term already beginning as of 1 September 2013 until the appointment process is completed.

Applications are to be addressed to the University of Lapland and delivered no later than Wednesday, 21 August 2013, at 13.00 (local Finnish time) to the following address:

University of Lapland, PO Box 122 (Registry, Yliopistonkatu 8), FI-96101 Rovaniemi, FINLAND. Applications documents will not be returned.
